The opal triplet gets its name from the fact that there are three components that make it up: one thin piece of a crystal opal that gets sandwiched between a top layer of something clear and a backing that is black.Typically, this top layer is created from plastic, glass or quartz whereas the black backing is typically made from a man-made resin or black potch. The opal triplets get cut out with a type of wire blade that is very thin. They use a cutting machine that has a metal block that is about 4 inches long and has around 100 cutting wires that are extremely thin wires.The black backing is used in this setup because it does an excellent job of enhancing the color of the opal layer, which really makes the piece stand out. The clear top layer is added on top as a way to protect the piece, making it more durable for a person to wear it. Because of these components that work together to make the opal triplet, this is a perfect stone option for rings. These stones are actually able to last around 20 years or even more, as long as it gets a polish from a professional jeweler occasionally. However, you should know that it is not a good idea to get this stone wet. If you do have an opal triplet ring, you should wear protective gloves to ensure that it is protected from the water.
